The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a significant AED165 million project aimed at enhancing access to Mall of the Emirates and upgrading surrounding roads. This initiative is part of Dubai’s continuous efforts to improve road infrastructure and alleviate traffic congestion.

    Project Highlights

    • 300-Meter Bridge: A new single-lane bridge will be constructed on Sheikh Zayed Road, offering direct access to Mall of the Emirates parking for drivers coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali.
    • Ramp Widening: The existing ramp at the Umm Suqeim intersection will be expanded southward to improve traffic flow from Umm Suqeim Street to the bridge leading to the mall’s parking lots.
    • Surface Roads Improvement: Enhancements will cover 2.5 km of surface roads around the mall. This includes upgrading three signalized intersections, modernizing the bus station at the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station, and converting a nearby street from one-way to two-way traffic.
    • Pedestrian and Cycling Enhancements: The project will also include improvements to pedestrian and cycling lanes, paving, lighting, traffic signals, and rainwater drainage systems. Landscaping and other aesthetic upgrades are part of the plan.

    Additional Details

    • Traffic Efficiency: Travel times for motorists coming from Umm Suqeim will be reduced from 15 minutes to 8 minutes, enhancing overall traffic flow and safety in the area.
    • Mall Features: Mall of the Emirates, which has been a major retail and entertainment hub since its opening in 2005, draws over 40 million visitors annually. It features 454 stores, 96 restaurants and cafes, and entertainment venues like Ski Dubai. The mall is connected to the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station via a pedestrian bridge.

    Broader Impact

The project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion around one of Dubai’s busiest shopping destinations, improving the overall experience for both visitors and residents. By enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times, these improvements will support the increasing volume of traffic in the area, which has grown in response to Dubai’s expanding urban landscape and population.

    Future Developments

This initiative reflects Dubai’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading its infrastructure in line with its rapid urban growth and development. The RTA’s continued focus on road improvements is integral to supporting the city’s dynamic economy and ensuring a high quality of life for its residents. The planned upgrades are a crucial step in addressing current traffic challenges and accommodating future demands as Dubai evolves.
