Dubai taxi sector sees 500,000 trip increase in first half of 2024
In the first half of 2024, Dubai’s taxi sector experienced a notable increase in the number of trips and passengers. The total number of journeys rose from 55.3 million to 55.7 million, while passenger numbers increased from 96.2 million to 96.9 million.
Consistent Growth in Transportation Industry
“The transportation industry has consistently grown over the last five years. This rise in the number of journeys, drivers, and vehicles directly responds to the increasing demand for the service, ensuring that customers’ needs are met,” said Director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
E-Hail Service Drives Sector Growth
The industry also experienced growth in its workforce, with the number of drivers rising from 26,000 to 30,000. The taxi fleet expanded by 644 vehicles, reaching a total of 12,778 in operation during the first half of 2024.
“E-bookings accounted for 40 percent of the total number of taxi journeys in Dubai during the first half of this year, a 5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. Furthermore, 76 percent of Hala journeys had an average vehicle arrival time of less than 3.5 minutes during the first half of 2024, surpassing the 73 percent rate achieved in the same period last year, highlighting the success of the e-hail service of Hala Taxi.
Expansion of Fleet and Workforce
The increase in fleet size and workforce reflects the sector’s capacity to handle the growing demand for taxi services. The addition of new vehicles and drivers has improved overall service levels, ensuring that more customers can be served efficiently. The expansion aligns with Dubai’s broader goals of enhancing public transportation and supporting the emirate’s dynamic economic environment.
Future Outlook and Innovations
Looking ahead, the RTA plans to continue investing in technological advancements and infrastructure improvements to further enhance the taxi sector. This includes integrating more digital solutions and expanding the use of electric and eco-friendly vehicles. These initiatives are expected to support the sector’s growth and help maintain Dubai’s status as a leading global city for innovation and sustainability in transportation.
