Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an increase in the minimum top-up amount for nol cards at Dubai Metro ticket offices. Beginning August 17, 2024, passengers will be required to add a minimum of AED 50 when recharging their nol cards. This adjustment is part of RTA’s ongoing efforts to streamline the payment process and encourage the use of digital platforms for public transport.
RTA Encourages Online Top-Ups for Flexibility and Convenience
The RTA is urging passengers to utilize online top-up methods for greater convenience and flexibility in recharge amounts. Passengers can now top up their nol cards through multiple digital channels, including the nol Pay mobile app, the RTA website, and the RTA Dubai app. These options allow commuters to choose their preferred recharge amount, making it easier to manage their travel expenses.
In addition to online platforms, nol card top-ups can also be done via machines located at Metro stations and ENOC/EPPCO petrol stations across Dubai. The RTA’s move towards digital services aims to enhance the overall customer experience by reducing wait times at ticket offices and providing a smoother, more efficient transit experience.
Why the Change?
The increase in the minimum top-up amount at ticket offices aligns with RTA’s broader strategy to promote cashless transactions and reduce congestion at Metro station counters. By setting a higher minimum top-up limit, the RTA anticipates a reduction in the frequency of small transactions at ticket offices, thus improving operational efficiency.
Passenger Reactions and Impact
This change has generated mixed reactions among commuters, with some expressing concerns over the higher upfront cost, especially for those who do not frequently use public transport. However, the RTA assures that the flexibility offered by digital top-ups, where passengers can still recharge smaller amounts, will mitigate these concerns. The RTA is confident that the benefits of the updated system, such as faster transaction times and improved service efficiency, will outweigh any initial inconvenience to passenger
