Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has announced the approval of a Dh30-billion integrated project to develop a rain drainage network in Dubai. Named ‘Tasreef,’ this project aims to enhance the capacity of Dubai’s rainwater drainage system by 700%, covering the entire emirate.

    Immediate Construction and Long-Term Service

Construction is set to begin immediately, with completion expected by 2033. Sheikh Mohammed stated that the new system would serve Dubai for the next hundred years. The network is designed to handle more than 20 million cubic meters of water per day, making it the largest rainwater collection system in the region.

    Continuation of Previous Projects

‘Tasreef’ continues the drainage projects initiated by Dubai in 2019, which covered areas such as Expo Dubai, Al Maktoum International Airport City, and Jebel Ali. This announcement follows unprecedented rains that flooded parts of the UAE two months ago.

    Addressing Climate Change Impacts

As a sustainable strategic initiative, ‘Tasreef’ aims to address future climate change impacts, including increased rainfall. The network is designed to adapt seamlessly to all rainfall events and will utilize the latest Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). These machines, the largest of their kind in the Middle East, are known for their efficiency, speed, precision, and ability to handle various topographical conditions.

    Enhanced Infrastructure for Future Growth

The implementation of the ‘Tasreef’ project is expected to significantly enhance Dubai’s infrastructure, supporting the city’s rapid growth and urban development. By investing in such a large-scale drainage network, Dubai is taking proactive steps to prevent flooding and ensure the safety and well-being of its residents and businesses.

    Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

This ambitious project reflects Dubai’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and advanced engineering solutions, ‘Tasreef’ sets a benchmark for other cities in the region. The initiative underscores Dubai’s vision to be a global leader in infrastructure resilience and environmental stewardship.
